Music and Lyrics

No, not the movie. I'm thinking about real writing, poetry versus lyrics. Is there a difference, other than the basic structure? Can poetry be sang into a melody that makes it song, or is poetry for high school literature books?
A dear friend presented these observations to me, and left my head spinning. Some of the things I scribble may be mere poetry, incapable of becoming a dauntless and haunting tune lodged in someone's mind....but isn't art based on freedom, with no boundaries? Isn't it up to the artist to decide what she produces, and the listener to choose whether or not they want to hear?
I think I'll keep my ideals. I'll write freely, sing freely, and hope someone hums the tune.
